University of Arizona cheer at the Shake Smart grand opening.

A healthy addition to the UA Campus Recreation center opened in early August 2018 to provide a nutritious, affordable and convenient option for students.

Shake Smart is a great place to pick up a protein-packed shake before or after a workout. It also offers sandwiches, acai bowls and wrap options. You can personalize any shake to your cravings and nutritional preferences. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are all available.

The cafe provides iPads that can be used to personalize and place your order. The iPads save all of your past orders for future visits. A Shake Smart app is available for download that allows you to preload money so all you need is your phone to pay. These features were added to make it a quick stop for busy customers.

Co-founder Kevin Gelfand started Shake Smart in 2013 at San Diego State University after he was tired of the limited healthy options available on campus. Now with over 200 employees between 12 locations, Gelfand and partner, Martin Reiman, plan to have a total of 20 locations by 2020.

Being able to work with a university in the pac-12 Conference was something Gelfand and Reiman always aspired to do ever since they started Shake Smart.

“The University of Arizona has always been one of our dream locations,” Gelfand said.

Gelfand sees similarities in campus size and health consciousness between UA and SDSU which gives him confidence that the UA location will be a hit.

Shake Smart kicked off the fall semester with a free shake day on Aug. 28, a tradition for each location’s grand opening. They handed out 1,838 free shakes.

Shake Smart is open weekdays 8 a.m.-10 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
