Grand Marshall
Hall of Fame Coach Lute Olson is the Grand Marshall for this year's Homecoming Parade.
The Bobcat Senior Honorary chose Olson because he best exemplifies this year's homecoming theme — One for the Ages.
Homecoming marks the culmination of the UA’s 125th Anniversary celebration.
In 24 seasons in Tucson, Olson amassed a 589-188 (.758) record that included 11 Pac-10 championships, four Final Four appearances, a national championship (1997) and a runner-up finish (2001), and transformed McKale Center into one of college basketball's most hallowed venues. That was merely half a career that spanned 49 seasons, included six decades, and featured more than 1,000 career wins on all levels.
Olson efforts were so swift that he guided UA to a conference title in year three, a Final Four berth in year five and never looked back, averaging nearly 25 wins per season and finishing in the top half of the Pac-10 for 23 consecutive seasons. Along the way, he coached three national players of the year, 19 All-Americans and saw 43 of his players drafted by NBA clubs. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, Olson was named one of the 10 greatest coaches in college basketball history by CBS Sports in 2003.
The Grand Marshall duties continue a busy fall for the former Wildcat mentor, as he was a part of the 2010 inductees to the Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame in Minot, N.D. The 27th annual Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame awards banquet was held Sept. 29.
