Alejandro Chibly

2026 AOY Honoree, Graduate College - Class of 2016

Alejandro Chibly was introduced to the University of Arizona campus in 2011 as an undergraduate in the Latin American summer research program. He returned to earn a doctoral degree from the Cancer Biology Graduate Interdisciplinary program in 2016.

After working at the National Institutes of Health, in 2021 Alex joined Genentech in San Francisco, where he has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing cancer research. His work has been particularly impactful in addressing therapy-resistant breast cancer, and he also has contributed to the development of innovative cancer detection technologies.

As a graduate student and throughout his career, Alex has shown an unwavering commitment to mentoring and fostering the professional growth of the next generation of scientists. His dedication extends beyond the laboratory through active participation in conference panels, where he shares his experiences in the biomedical industry to help graduate students navigate career pathways and make informed professional decisions.

Alex actively promotes inclusive practices that foster a sense of belonging and community across professional and social settings. At Genentech, he is the co-chair of gPRIDE, an employee resource group that enhances inclusion throughout the organization. And his leadership extends beyond the workplace, such as serving on the board of directors for Stonewall Sports San Francisco and as team captain in the DC Pride and Stonewall Volleyball Leagues, where he champions teamwork, respect and representation.

For his contributions to cancer research and his commitment to supporting the next generation of scientists, the University of Arizona is proud to name Alejandro Chibly the 2026 Alumnus of the Year for the Graduate College.
