Todd Pletcher is one of the most successful and respected trainers in the history of American thoroughbred racing. Born into a racing family, Todd began his career at a young age, working for his father, Jake Pletcher, as a hot walker at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. His passion for the sport grew over the years, with formative experiences at Louisiana Downs, Hollywood Park and Del Mar. Todd further honed his skills at the University of Arizona's Race Track Industry Program, where he graduated with a bachelor of animal science in 1989.

Todd’s professional career began as an assistant trainer under Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, where he played a key role in developing horses such as Thunder Gulch, Harlan, Serena’s Song, and Flanders. In 1995, Todd ventured out on his own, earning his trainer’s license and quickly establishing himself as a top-tier competitor. He won his first race in 1996 and has since become a dominant force in the sport.

Todd has won the prestigious Eclipse Award as Trainer of the Year eight times, including four consecutive years. In 2021, he was inducted into the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame. His notable victories include two wins at the Kentucky Derby and four at the Belmont Stakes as well as one win at the Kentucky Oaks.

Todd’s dedication to the sport includes remaining deeply involved with the U of A's Race Track Industry Program, offering mentorship to students and speaking at industry events such as RTIP’s Global Symposium on Racing.

Todd and his wife, Tracy, have three children: Payton, Kyle and Hannah.
