2026 AOY Honoree, College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences - Class of 1992 and 1994
George J. Cairo earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural and biosystems engineering from the University of Arizona. In the 30 years since, he has become a pioneering force at the intersection of water, agriculture and energy, pushing the boundaries of how technology can stretch our water resources.
George is the founder and principal engineer of George Cairo Engineering, specializing in water conveyance and irrigation system modernization design. He also founded Cairo Canal Solutions, which focuses on innovation in irrigation operations and maintenance solutions, and Water Xience, a venture dedicated to integrating solar, hydro, wind and bioenergy with water infrastructure to create sustainable circular bio-economic solutions for the Southwest.
Widely recognized for his work with Native American communities, George designed the nation’s first Canal Energy System — a renewable energy initiative developed for the Gila River Indian Community. He serves as the engineer of record for several irrigation and water districts and is known nationally for his leadership in water resources engineering, irrigation modernization and agricultural-to-urban conversion.
A diplomat of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineering, George has received multiple honors for professional achievement. He also gives generously of his time, serving on the UAU of A’s Biosystems Engineering Advisory Board and the UA Hispanic Alumni Board. He also is an Agriculture 100 Council member, and he is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of engineers.
For his outstanding career of innovation and leadership, the University of Arizona Alumni is proud to name George Cairo the 20252026 Alumnus of the Year for the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences.
