More than a fight song, “Bear Down, Arizona!” is the soundtrack of Wildcat pride. For generations, it has united students, alumni, athletes, and fans around a shared tradition inspired by one of the university’s most enduring stories.
A Song Begins in the Sky
In 1952, musician Jack K. Lee visited Tucson to interview for the University of Arizona’s band director position. After learning the story behind the “Bear Down” rallying cry and spotting the words painted atop Bear Down Gym from an airplane, he began writing a song on an airsickness bag during his flight home.
Inspiration to Anthem
Lee was hired as Arizona’s band director, and “Bear Down, Arizona!” debuted publicly at a downtown Tucson pep rally in 1952. The song quickly became one of the university’s most recognizable traditions and a defining expression of Wildcat spirit.
Living Tradition
Today, the Pride of Arizona Marching Band carries the song forward at athletic events, campus celebrations, and university gatherings. Whether in Arizona Stadium, McKale Center, or on the Mall, its familiar notes continue to bring Wildcats together
