Celebrating Students

In April, U of A junior Ojas Sanghi received an email from a university administrator asking him to come in and discuss his application for the Truman Scholarship, a highly competitive award that provides graduate school funding for students pursuing careers in government or public service.

Sanghi thought it was odd: He’d already done his interview and filed what needed to be filed. But he showed up at Old Main as requested, and was led by a dean into an office — President Suresh Garimella’s. He’d gotten the scholarship. One of 53 students from a pool of 743 candidates nominated by nearly 300 U.S. colleges and universities — and he was one.

As the University of Arizona winds down another academic year, we’d like to issue congratulations to all our students, whether they’re graduating, entering the workforce or continuing with coursework and research. Their success is at the heart of everything this university does. We look forward to seeing you out there.

As for Sanghi, well, he’d been thinking about the Truman Scholarship since the summer before he started at U of A. He’d even made a spreadsheet dedicated to getting his ducks in a row to make his candidacy stand out. He’s currently vice president of a student-led organization that encourages a focus on clean and sustainable energy sources and is a member of the AZ Youth Climate Coalition. He also works on the City of Tucson Commission on Climate, Energy and Sustainability. We suspect he’ll keep plenty busy.
